Abstract
An interaction method of reducing concentric column theories, curves, or test data to account for eccentricity of loading is used as a basis for determining the optimum proportions and sizes for columns having eccentrically applied loading or initial crookedness. Inelastic effects and local buckling are included. The optimization method, based on the structural index, provides a simple and efficient design procedure. Extensions of the method to include arbitrary nonoptimum dimensional limits are described. Practical design examples are included. Comparisons of the interaction method with other theories of eccentric column behavior are made.
