Abstract
The immediate and near-future research needs in structural engineering are identified by major subject area and are discussed briefly. Estimates of the costs of the recommended research programs are presented. An effort has also been made to relate equipment and facility needs and the increase in research personnel requirements to the total estimated cost of the proposed programs. The projected structural engineering research needs are broken down by general subject area as follows: Methods of analysis and design; electronic computation; masonry and reinforced concrete; metal structures; structural plastics; wood structures; buried structures; structures in outer space; underwater structures; new structural materials and forms; and implementation of new knowledge.
