Abstract

The problem of increasing the buckling load of a 114-ft long reinforced concrete column by introducing various elastic restraints is studied. General expressions are derived and graphs are presented applicable to any elastic column covering the full range of variation of the parameters. In addition, the effect of the weight of the column in the reduction of the critical load is shown to be substantial depending on the conditions of end support. A general method is presented to account for this effect. Graphs are also presented to facilitate the determination of the net critical load for the most practical cases. Two illustrative examples are examined at length to show the application of the methods.
