Abstract
The requirements of a computer system for performing matrix algebra are considered, and two systems that have been extensively used in practice are described in detail. One system is for an IBM 1620 with 40k core storage and card input-output. The other, called GISMO, is for an IBM 7090 with a 32, 768 word core storage, and 8 to 11 magnetic tape units. In addition to the standard matrix algebra operations, the systems include operations for certain other manipulations that have proven useful in structural analysis. The two systems may be used in conjunction with each other and with other computer programs. The use of automated procedures, which included these systems, on a large structural project is described.
