Abstract
The structural response to internal pressure (to 10 psig) of a thick reinforced concrete containment cell was tested. The experimental strains were measured with SR-4 strain gages and compared with analytical strains. The analytical strains were calculated by analyzing a longitudinal frame bent, a transverse frame bent, and a horizontal box frame. Satisfactory agreement was obtained. Apparent disagreement at re-entrant corners and openings is alleviated by the proper application of stress concentration factors. The frames and the whole cell behave elastically. The analysis based on the moment distribution method and on uncracked concrete sections is valid. Construction joints, if carefully made, can sustain tensile stresses at least as high as 1/3 of the concrete tensile strength.
