Abstract
An experimental study is presented of the fatigue behavior of two prestressed steel I-beams with welded full length cover plates. Both beams were subjected to flexural repeated stresses that finally caused each beam to fail. The study was extended to determine the state of stress in the specimens. This was done by a sectioning method revealing that the welds were areas of high tensile stresses, probably near yield stress. Superimposing the repeated stress range on the observed residuals and comparing this with a modified Goodman diagram for as-received materials, showed that a substantial portion of the reduction in fatigue life could be due to the high residual stresses.
