Abstract
It is demonstrated that the method of direct integration is an effective approach for making flexural calculations of nonuniform members through the use of generalized functions. The operational properties of the pertinent functions are reviewed, and a formula for finding the reciprocal of a series of step functions is established. Simple formulas are obtained for calculating the flexural constants of members with stepwise variation of stifmess. It is demonstrated that tapered or haunched beams can be conveniently replaced by appropriate stepped beams as excellent approximations.
