Abstract

A moment-balancing process is devised for finding a lower bound to the collapse load of a rigid-jointed plane grid frame for which the torsional stiffness of the constituent beam members is negligible. The method is general and can be applied to grid frames of any configuration. Regularity of beam layout is not necessary. Frames possessing cut-outs, etc., present no difficulty. Use of the process is illustrated by application to two simple frames and to one that is more complex. It is shown that, when used in conjunction with the mechanism approach, both upper and lower bounds of the collapse load are easily obtained.
