Abstract
The buckling strength of a rectangular frame subjected to loads that produce primary bending moments in the members is examined. Both the symmetrical and antisymmetrical modes are considered in the investigation. The results indicate that the critical load associated with the symmetrical mode is appreciably reduced by primary moment effects, whereas the critical load for antisymmetrical buckling is only slightly affected. The presence of axial thrust in the cross beam is found to be responsible for the major part of the reductions. The theoretical buckling loads are checked by experiments conducted on model steel frames. It is noted that the elastic buckling strength of portal frames can be closely predicted by the existing methods. A method for analyzing the stability of frames with partial base fixity is also presented.
