Irrigation Prospects in Bendel State of Nigeria
Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 105, Issue 1
Abstract
With the discovery of oil, Nigeria experienced a phenomenal economic growth and a decline in agricultural productivity. To arrest the downward trend in agriculture, the Federal and state governments launched programs aimed at producing more food for the nation. This paper examines the prospects of irrigation practice in Bendel State as a method of increasing the agricultural output by ensuring all-season farming. Information is presented on the geography, climate, water resources, and irrigable sites in the State. It is observed that a solution to the question of insufficient agricultural output lies in introducing mechanized farming and irrigation practice. Success will be assured if credit facilities, incentives, subsidized simple mechanized farming tools, and sustained enlightenment program are provided by the government or the responsible agencies.
