Control of Salt-Water Intrusion by Recharge Wells

Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 102, Issue 4

Abstract

The present investigation involves study of the effect of a battery of recharge wells on control of salt water in coastal confined aquifers. In each investigation, the battery has a specific number of recharge wells equally spaced and located along a line normal to the direction of natural ground-water flow and parallel to the shoreline. The degree of salt-water retardation is defined in the text and determined for 96 cases. The results may be used directly in managing coastal aquifers as illustrated by an example. Various conditions are studied by changing the location of the battery from the coast, the magnitude of well spacing intensities of pumping, and their duration. All wells are assumed to be recharging at the same intensity for the same periods of time in each system. Influencing factors are grouped into dimensionless parameters and results of the solutions lead to the construction of design graphs.
