Aqueduct Optimization with Intermediate Storage

Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 102, Issue 2

Abstract

A new method has been presented for determining optimum aqueduct capacity with intermediate storage along the aqueduct. The method maximizes the net benefits and determines the optimum reservoir size once the reservoir location has been selected by the planner. The model has been designed for development planning purposes. The mathematical model is presented in two sections. In the first section the reservoir is located at the last downstream turnout. In the second section a more general model is presented and the reservoir may be located at any one of the turnouts. A reduction in aqueduct capacity is achieved through storage regulation. Data for the model are only a test data representative of existing water resources projects. The results indicate only the nature of the benefits and aqueduct reservoir capacities that may be achieved and are not applicable to any particular water resources project.
