Abstract
Fixed-speed electric drives of pumps drawing from a wet-well require a minimum time period between successive starts to avoid overheating. The wet-well volume, assuring that this time period is maintained for any inflow into the wet-well, is found for multipump systems and two practical operating sequences. The wet-well volume can be minimized if the operating sequence, the number of pumps (for a given discharge rate), and the relative discharge capacity of each pump are simultaneously evaluated in the original design of the system.
