Water Accounting at Pumping Station S-5A in Florida
Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 95, Issue 4
Abstract
Pumping station S-5A, a complex component of the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control Project, has as its purpose the removal of flood waters from adjoining farmlands, the reduction of the eastward flow to the ocean and the pumping of these excess waters to storage in a conservation area for dry-period use. The complex comprises a pump station equipped with six diesel-powered pumps with a combined capacity of 2.16 million gallons per minute, and three gated control structures. Water accounting is based on continuous records at five gaging stations on adjacent canals and records of pumpage. The flows through each component of the S-5 complex are computed either from the defined relationships between recorded parameters and discharge or as the residual quantity needed to balance the inflows and outflows of the system.
