Abstract
An infiltration equation that describes separately the effects of flow retardance from sugarcane growing in the furrow, the inflow rate, and the furrow slope, shape, and spacing as related to time, is a basic requirement in developing criteria for design and regulation of the amount and uniformity of water application in sugarcane furrow-irrigation systems. Inflow-outflow measurements were taken for each irrigation of 18 furrows planted to sugarcane during the crop cycle of approximately 2 yr. A regression analysis of infiltration equations developed from the 200-furrow inflow-outflow measurements resulted in a quadratic polynomial equation relating slope, inflow rate, sugarcane age, and time to infiltration. The polynomial regression equation was reduced to parabolic form to simplify comparison and use, for selected values of crop age, furrow slope, and inflow rate. The use of the derived quantitative infiltration equation is limited to sugarcane furrows occurring in soils of the Molokai series, or other soils of similar characteristics.
