Drainage by Pumped Wells in Wellton-Mohawk District

Publication: Journal of the Irrigation and Drainage Division
Volume 93, Issue 3

Abstract

After Colorado River water was used for irrigation in the Welton-Mohawk District in southwestern Arizona, a drainage problem resulted. The most feasible means of controlling ground-water elevations was by pumped wells discharging into a concrete-lined channel. Although effective for drainage, this caused a salinity problem with Mexico. Eventually, a bypass channel was constructed as solution, but flood flows in Gila River in 1966 complicated the salinity and drainage problems.
