Abstract
Water re-use in the Los Angeles area is planned to furnish a supplemental water supply in a water deficient area. The County Sanitation Districts have found that suitability of waste water for re-use depends on the water supply quality and the character of industrial waste pollutants. Detailed planning is necessary for effective water re-use. This involves reservation of suitable plant sites and separation of non-reclaimable industrial wastes from reclaimable waters. Experience in operation of the Whittier Narrows Water Reclamation Plant has shown water re-use to be technically and economically feasible. Plans for water re-use developments in the Los Angeles area by the Sanitation Districts are presented. Reclaimed water may be used for such purposes as industrial use; irrigation water for forage crops, cotton, nursery stock, field crops, parks, and golf courses; and recharging underground water basins. It is hoped that presentation of water re-use experience and plans in the Los Angeles area will stimulate water re-use in other communities.
