Role of the Coordinating Committee on Energy
Abstract
A Coordinating Committee on Energy (CCE) has been formed by the Presidents of major professional and technical Societies serving over 600,000 members. Its role is to enhance inter-Society cooperation within the profession, respond to policy issues affecting engineers, advise Societies of impending problems, and to communicate with the public. It seeks to improve the credibility of engineers with legislators, explain national policies to its membership, and to create a new ethic based on the careful husbanding of energy resources by combination of development and conservation. The CCE has organized a major program called the Energy Initiative with two major objectives: (1)Vehicle for unity within the profession, and (2)it will serve as a means for explaining the options to the general public. It has acted as a liaison group in the formation of the newly created Engineering Societies Commission on Energy (ESCOE) and has attempted to provide a balanced perspective on the trade-off between increased use of coal and the role of nuclear power.
