Abstract
In a tendon surveillance program of containment structures, a small sample of tendons is periodically tested to measure adequacy of the existing prestressing force. The sample size required for such testing depends upon the method of sampling adopted and, of course, on the confidence desired in the testing program. For measurable quality characteristics, such as prestressing forces in containment tendons, the method of sampling by variable is most appropriate. Using this method of sampling, a test plan for in-service tendon surveillance of containment structures is proposed. The mathematical background and procedural details of the plan are given. The plan is proposed for typical containments provided with about 900 tendons. Also, it is demonstrated here that, for containments provided with about 400 tendons, the required sample size is still the same, and therefore, the proposed scheme is appropriate. The proposed plan is considered to be efficient and simple enough to be adopted in practice.
