Sequoyah Ice Condenser Containment Structure
This article has a reply.
VIEW THE REPLYAbstract
The Sequoyah Nuclear Plant (TVA) contains two Westinghouse Electric Corporation 1221-Mwe units with a pressurized water steam supply system and an ice condenser containment. This plant is designed to absorb the energy from accidental ruptures of the reactor coolant system by routing the flow of steam through 1200 tons of ice. The routing of steam is accomplished by an internal reinforced concrete structure which houses the reactor and steam generator equipment. By using the ice to absorb the energy, the containment pressure is reduced and contained inside a freestanding steel vessel. The structural loadings, methods of analysis, allowable stresses, and controlling design conditions for the concrete shield building, structural steel freestanding containment vessel and internal concrete structure are examined.
