Thermal Capacity of Our Nation's Waterways
This article has a reply.
VIEW THE REPLYAbstract
A study was made to assess the thermal capacity of rivers within the contiguous United States. Formats used by both the Geological Survey and Federal Power Commission were used to delineate study basins. Within each basin projected power growth was compared to computed capacities. A total of nine reports, eight basin and a final, have been issued. Capacities were computed using simulation models. The capacity calculations were based upon conditions of low and average flow. The calculations were constrained by imposing the appropriate water temperature standards. The effect of maximum temperatures was considered by analyzing long-term temperature records wherever available. A number of basins were found to possess suitable capacity for siting additional thermoelectric power plants. More detailed examination may prove this capacity nonexistent. Project power through the year 1990 was considered.
