Abstract

Many phases and engineering problems involved in modern day hydroelectric power generation plants are presented. There is a review of the project history, location, size, cost, and economics. Some of the many difficulties involved in obtaining a license are explained as well as problems concerned with economical justification of this low head pump storage project. Plans for recreation and recreational facilities are presented along with considerable concern for wildlife preservation and other ecological effects. Also reviewed are unique features found in the pump-turbines, the 1-ft to 2-ft maximum yearly drawdown of the reservoir, and the tailrace design. In addition, the need and usefulness of hydraulic model studies is stressed with data, design features, and conclusions presented as a result of these studies. Finally, the potential for attracting new industry and development of new communities is recognized.
