Velocity and Temperature in Buoyant Surface Jet
Authors: Richard Dornhelm, Manuel Nouel, and R. L. Wiegel, F.ASCEAuthor Affiliations
Abstract
Laboratory studies of turbulence in surface buoyant jets were made using hot film anemometers. Results showed considerable turbulence was generated in the jets. Comparisons are presented for temperature and velocity fluctuations in surface jets for a range of Reynolds numbers and densimetric Froude numbers. Difficulties in using hot film anemometers in salt water are described, together with methods to minimize some of the difficulties. Effects of large scale surface eddies generated between jet and tank walls are described, together with experimental results that show surface tension to be unimportant in the tests.
