Abstract
Determining the economic diameter of hydraulic conduits, tunnels, pipelines, or penstocks, requires minimizing the total cost (capital plus OM&R) of those elements which are a function of conduit diameter. A direct solution for economic diameter is presented which uses levelized operating and economic conditions and for which internal loads determine minimum thickness. The development allows for the difference in value of pumping and generating losses. The formulas may be simplified to size conduits with unidirectional flow and easily modified when external loading governs conduit wall thickness. They are not applicable to manifolds and transitions.
