Abstract

The technique of dynamic programming is shown to be successfully applied to complex reservoir operation studies. The technique is applied to the Oroville-Thermolite complex located on the Feather River in northern California. The mean annual unimpaired runoff of the Feather River is 4,200,000 acre-ft. This application includes provision for pumped storage and two-stage power generation facilities. An IBM 7094 computer program was used. Though this application is costly in terms of machine time, it is sufficiently complex to demonstrate the usefulness of this technique for application to a wide variety of hydropower projects.
