Abstract

Where unlined tunnels are a part of a hydraulic power conduit, properly designed rock traps are required to collect the transported material and prevent excessive abrasion of turbine components. Performance of the trap system for the Jaybird Development during the initial 2 yrs of operation is examined, the results of a hydraulic model testing program are presented, and the consequent modifications of the Jaybird trap system are outlined. Also presented is a new concept for the design of rock traps.
