Study of hydraulic characteristics of sudden enlargements formed by placing orifices and valves in pipe lines; efficiency of sudden enlargements as energy dissipators, their cavitation potential, and methods for preventing cavitation damage to downstream water passage walls; characteristics of enlargements placed in series to dissipate energy of high head flows, and application to turbine bypasses.
