Elastic Stresses in Fretting Fatigue

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 107, Issue 2

Abstract

The distribution of stresses in a typical two-dimensional fretting-fatigue problem has been analyzed by assuming homogeneous, isotropic and linearly elastic material. Closed type solutions have been obtained that are exact within the assumptions used. According to the numerical results presented, a small region of the plate immediately outside the contact area would appear to be most critical from the viewpoint of crack initiation. However, under certain conditions (e.g., in the presence of micropores or other types of discontinuities) cracks could also initiate at some subsurface sites.
