Ultimate Load Behavior of Curved I-Beams

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 107, Issue 2

Abstract

A method of analyzing the large-deflection behavior of the horizontally curved I-beam, in both elastic and inelastic regions, by using the transfer matrix method is presented. Three kinds of separate loading (e.g., equal end moments, a concentrated load at the midspan, and uniformly distributed load) are considered for this analysis. The ultimate strength is determined for several given curvatures. Experimental studies are also made for six supported I-beams to determine the effect of curvature on the behavior of ultimate load-deformation. Finally, a formula is also deduced to predict the approximate ultimate strength of the curved I-beams.
