Pipeline Response to Random Ground Motion

Abstract
Seismic response of buried pipelines in both lateral and longitudinal directions is investigated theoretically using a distributed-mass model of the pipe. Soil-pipe interaction is accounted for considering complex soil reactions derived for a viscoelastic continuum. Seismic excitation is considered random and partially correlated. The aim of the study is to find out whether this kind of excitation could produce pipe stresses in excess of those calculated under the usual assumption of full correlation of seismic excitation. It appears that the lack of correlation of the seismic excitation can produce high stresses in the pipe. The level of these stresses depends on the degree of correlation of the excitation and its frequency contents. An extensive parametric study clarifies the effects of main factors such as pipe dimensions, soil properties, etc.
