Elasto-Plastic Torsion of Axisymmetric Bars

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 105, Issue 1

Abstract

A numerical approach for solving the elasto-plastic torsion problem of axisymmetric bars is presented. The method uses finite elements and a minimum rate principle of plasticity to provide a complete stress history under the action of a quasi-static monotonically increasing angle of twist. The use of finite elements and a stress function formulation reduce the minimum rate principle to a quadratic programming problem. The developed method is shown to be quite general in application and to provide good comparisons with available solutions.
