Three-Dimensional Analysis of Spinal Deformities

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 104, Issue 1

Abstract

Present methods of obtaining quantitative measurements of spinal deformities for the clinical assessment of scoliosis from routine spine radiographs are inaccurate and inadequate. Two-dimensional measurements are used to assess three-dimensional deformities. This paper describes a method of digitizing orthogonal spine radiographs and fitting to the data third order three-dimensional parameter spline functions representing the deformed spine. The method has been used for clinical assessment and monitoring of paralytic spinal deformities at The Hospital for Sick Children for the past 3 yr.
