Impact Stresses in Human Head-Neck Model

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 104, Issue 1

Abstract

An experimental investigation of the transient response of the dynamic loading of a life-like model of the human head is described. The models were made of polystyrene and polyvinyl acetate material that had a Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio similar to those of the cranial bone, and its shape was anatomically similar to an adult human skull. The importance of the magnitude and type of impacting force, type of neck support, and location of the impacting force are analyzed. Pressure and stress distributions are presented for different times during the impacting period and implications of the results for head injury are considered.
