Membrane Model of Surface Effects

Abstract
A membrane model of surface phenomena in elastic solids, arising from the deposition of thin films, existence of residual and intrinsic surface force, and surface tension, is introduced in this paper. To establish the mathematical structure of the model the nonlinear equations of general shells are utilized, and are linearized to incorporate the surface elasticity, surface mass, and surface prestress in the model. As an application, the problem of torsional, and radial-longitudinal waves in cylinders with surface effects is considered. The wave characteristics are determined and are compared with classical results.
