Abstract
Based on matrix algebra, decomposition, and linear programming techniques, a general mathematical model is developed for rigid-plastic analysis of discrete elements and structures under combined stresses governed by piecewise linear constitutive laws. The model is formulated through reference to skeletal structures but also applies without formal or conceptual changes to discretized plates, shells and multidimensional continua. For skeletal structures, the model is directly applicable to member cross sections to determine piecewise linear yield conditions as well as to entire frameworks to determine collapse loads. Several worked examples concerning both engineering cross sections and planar and space frameworks are presented.
