Abstract
The behavior of thin square perforated plates under the action of uniform shear deformation is studied experimentally and analytically using finite element analysis. Elastic shear buckling strength is established as a function of the diameter, d, of a round centrally located hole in a square plate with side dimension b. For aluminum plates with b/t = l59 and d/b ratios ranging from 0 to 0.6, the reduction in critical load capacity may be approximated conservatively by the factor /l - (d/b)/. The ultimate load capacity ranged from three to five times the elastic buckling load. The behavior of perforated plates with various ring stiffeners is also studied experimentally, and the stiffeners are shown to substantially increase the efficiency of the plates in resisting shear buckling.
