Abstract
Recently several papers have appeared in which variation methods have been used to set up both elastic and geometric stiffness matrices for open sections for which both St. Venants. and warping torsion occurs. It is the purpose of this note to show how these expressions can be derived by using the principle of virtual displacements and also that the structure of the matrices involved in the geometric stiffness is revealed when the formulation is given in three dimensions.
