Randomness of Settlement Rate under Stochastic Load
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 100, Issue 6
Abstract
The effect of randomly varying load on the one-dimensional consolidation of a homogeneous clay stratum is analyzed. Upon describing the load process as a stationary random function of time, a general solution for the first and second moment of the degree of consolidation is obtained in terms of Green's function of the associated deterministic boundary value problem. The results are then applied to a specific case involving a particular family of autocorrelation functions of the applied loading process, and the influence of the different parameters is evaluated. Finally, the differential settlement caused by different rates of settlement between two nearby points is examined in terms of the cross correlation between the loading processes at the two points.
