Abstract
The variations of the statistical characteristics of the axial velocity fluctuation behind grids in a water flow field with significant free-stream turbulence (FST) are determined experimentally using a hot-film anemometer and analog processors. Three different grids and two levels of FST are adopted. The same characteristics are estimated for the case of negligible FST from the equations of Naudascher and Farell. The results indicate that the intensity and microscale are considerably altered by the existence of FST, whereas the macroscale is not significantly changed. In all cases, an asymptotic condition, dependent on the FST and the grid used, is obtained. The spectral density functions vividly portray the action of the grids.
