Abstract
Fracture and fragmentation of brittle materials by heating are well known but poorly understood phenomena. This study was performed to enhance understanding of initial stress concentrations and resulting fragmentation during surface heating of brittle prism solids. Experiments were carried out on quartzite rock prisms subjected to sudden uniform heating to correlate the theoretical predictions. The results show that thermal stress concentrations occur in the specimen interior near the edges. Experimental results are in agreement with the maximum principle stress fracture criterion for brittle materials.
