Displacement Bounds for Blast Loaded Structures
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 98, Issue 4
Abstract
In an earlier paper a technique was introduced by Morales and Nevill to bound from below the inelastic deformations of dynamically loaded structures. The disturbance was assumed to be of the impulsive type, i.e., displacement rates throughout the entire volume of the continuum are specified at time t=0 while thereafter either the surface tractions or the displacement rates vanished. In this paper, the lower bound theorem is extended to other transient loading problems in which the loads are applied over a finite interval of time (as distinct from the purely impulsive loading). The theorem is applied, for illustration purposes, to blast loaded beam and plate structures and comparisons made between the predictions of the lower bound theorem developed here, the exact solution, the upper bounds determined by Robinson and the approximate mode solutions obtained by Kaliszky.
