Thick Shell Stress Resultants

Abstract

The parameters used in describing the geometric properties of shell space may vary considerably with the surface normal coordinate in thick shells. Herein, generalizations of the classical stress and moment resultant tensors are defined for a thick shell theory based on an infinite power series expansion of the spatial displacement vector. These generalized tensors are expressed in terms of the appropriate kinematic variables thereby permitting closed form integration across the shell thickness and the derivation of explicit expressions for these higher-order variables.
