Soil Indentation by Translating Flanged Plate

Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 97, Issue 4

Abstract

Under the idealization that soil is a weightless, isotropic, frictional material with cohesion, the two-dimensional problem of quasistatic soil indentation by a translating grouser plate is solved. This problem can be stated in two distinct ways: (1) given the plate translation direction, determine the magnitude and direction of the plate collapse load and (2) given the collapse load direction, determine the collapse load magnitude and the plate translation direction. The results are presented in graphical form. Only the class of problems with the collapse load inclined downwardly and the plate translation direction inclined forwardly is considered.
