Abstract
Existing analysis techniques for lateral column vibrations under time pendent axial loads neglect the dynamic amplification caused by these loads. Respon to one type of dynamic load is investigated, and the basic linear differential equation motion is developed. Maximum transient displacements at midspan of initially curve. columns on simple supports under static plus sinusoidal dynamic axial load are found by an analog computer. Results are plotted in the form of response spectra, and an example of their use is shown. Regions of instability are seen to be in agreement with published analytical solutions. Even numbered instable regions are found to be of greater significance than odd numbered regions. Interpretation of the spectra to represent axial support movement is shown.
