Elastic-Plastic Behavior of intersecting Shells
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division

Abstract
Seven steel cyliner-sphere axisymmetric intersecting shells are tested under internal pressure. Each model consists of a hemispherical shell with a central cut-out to which a right cylinderical shell is welded. The test specimens cover a wide range of parameters; cylindrical shells range from about 2-7/8 in. to 7 in. in outside diam and 0.06 in. to 0.19 in. in thickness; whereas hemispheres range from about 15 in. to 20 in. in outside diam and 0.12 in. to 0.23 in. in thickness. The yield strength, which is the key parameter for the comparison of theoretical predictions with experimental results, is determined from an extensive testing programme. The elastic- plastic response of intersecting shells is compared with theoretical predictions based on rigld-perfectly plastic behavior. The calculated limit pressure is seen to be in agreement with the load at Which appreciable plastic deformation occurred, when the effect of reinforcement caused by fillet weld at the junction is considered.
