Abstract
The free transverse vibrations of a rectangular plate simply supported along the periphery and rigidly connected to its interior columns is solved by subdividing the structure into elementary components-the plate and columns, and replacing connections between these components by harmonic restraining forces at the connections. The conditions of continuity of the original structural system provide the equation from which the natural frequencies of the plate can be obtained. Examples are presented to illustrate the approach and to show the effect of bending stiffness of the supporting columns on the natural frequencies of the system.
