Optimum Design of Beams for Sudden Loading

Abstract
Cantilever and simply supported beams are modeled as multidegree-of-freedom systems. Impulse, step, and exponentially decaying loads are considered. By defining response index, the displacement response to these loads is related to mass distribution (shape) of beams. The response index is minimized with respect to the N section masses to yield an optimum design. The optimum shapes are dependent on the type of force, the location of the load and on the manner in which the cross sections vary. The optimum shapes do not depend on the material constants.
