Abstract
A direct method is presented for solving a system of linear equations which possesses a coefficient matrix of either a single diagonal band or a multiple diagonal band. The approach is to divide the coefficient matrix into three sub-matrices, and to select a few coupling elements as the primary variables. The remaining variables, then, will be expressed in terms of these primary variables. Thus each system can be treated separately. The solution of these primary variables must be obtained first; after that, the solution of the remaining variables follows immediately. This method applies most beneficially to a structure of two weakly coupled systems.
