Abstract
Mathematical programming techniques are applied to obtain a lower bound, as large as possible, for estimating the load capacity of arch dams. The method is based on the theorem of statically admissible field for plastic materials. Application of the technique to four dam models shows good agreement between the numerical and experimental results.
