Abstract
An analysis, applicable to wind-loaded tower structures and wave-loaded off-shore platforms, is presented. First a mathematical analysis, which considers time dependent loadings, a large number of degrees of freedom and internal and external damping, is formulated to determine resonant frequencies along with the corresponding peak forces and displacements. Second a physical model analysis for a specific tower structure is carried out to confirm and extend the results from the mathematical model. A welded four-legged steel tower, 36-in. high is externally loaded by an electro-magnetic shaker. Resonant frequencies are determined by a force gage and visual observations with stroboscopic light.
